+ MoreBideford is a historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge in North Devon, with a bustling quay, medieval Long Bridge, and a lively pannier market.
Known locally as 'Little White Town' -- after Charles Kingsley's description in his novel Westward Ho! -- Bide...ford has been a working port since the Middle Ages. Today the town retains its maritime character while offering an appealing mix of independent shops, galleries, and cafes along the quayside and the narrow streets that climb the hillside behind it. The famous Long Bridge, with its 24 arches spanning the Torridge, has stood in some form since the 13th century and remains the heart of the town.
Town Amenities
Bideford is well served for everyday needs. There is a Lidl, Co-op, and Tesco Express in the town centre, along with a range of independent shops, a post office, pharmacies, banks, and a library. The Pannier Market Hall hosts a general market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and a crafts and collectables market on other weekdays. You will also find a good selection of gift shops, bookshops, and art galleries along the quay and Mill Street.
