The region
+ MoreExmoor National Park straddles North Devon and West Somerset. Brendon is not far from the coast and there are a myriad of fantastic walks, lovely beaches and interesting places to explore nearby! The nearest amenities are found in Lynmouth and Lynton, or in the opposite direct...ion is Porlock. Lynton has a range cafes, restaurants and pubs to choose from, there are two mini-supermarkets, a bank, post office, chemist and an excellent Tourist Information Centre. There is also a small cinema, and tennis and bowls facilities. The twin village of Lynmouth sits on the harbour below at the bottom of the hill, and also has a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants. Lynmouth can be accessed via road, footpath or the famous funicular railway between Lynmouth and Lynton. Lynton and Lynmouth are very special places to visit, the spectacular coastline and deeply cut river valleys in this unique area provide wonderful opportunities for walking; the South West Coast Path and the Two Moors Way are two examples. The famous Watersmeet is not far away, a beautiful National Trust tea garden and shop situated at the meeting of the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water. If this isn't enough, sandy beaches can be found within a delightful scenic drive. Porlock is a wonderful working Exmoor village and boasts three pubs, two grocery shops, a traditional local butcher, chemist, cash machine, hardware shop, visitor centre, art galleries and a range of independent restaurants, shops and tea rooms. The larger towns of Minehead 14 miles, Ilfracombe and Barnstaple are all approximately 20 miles away, here you will find the larger supermarkets, high street banks, etc.
A short walk from the property is The Staghunters Inn, tel 01598 741222. The family owned and run Staghunters Inn is know for its good food, offering seasonal and traditional Devon favourites and a wide choice of drinks including the highly regarded local Exmoor Ale. All served in a idyllic and peaceful location. The opening hours are as follows: Monday – Sunday 12pm - 11pm. Approx 2 miles away is The Blue Ball Inn, tel 01598 741263. The Blue Ball is a traditional coaching inn, located in the hamlet of Countisbury, on the A39 just outside Lynton and Lynmouth. The opening hours are as follows: Monday – Sunday 12pm - 11pm. The Rockford Inn, approx 1 mile down the valley road, tel 01598 741214. The Rockford Inn, perhaps one of cosiest Country Inn Hotels in Devon, hidden away in a deep, wooded Exmoor valley. Lynmouth National Park Centre have friendly and informed staff who will be able to give you bespoke advice to ensure that you get the most out of your stay. Well worth a visit on The Esplanade in Lynmouth. The legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway opened in 1898, and then closed in 1935 – what you can see today at Woody Bay is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world’s most famous and picturesque narrow gauge railways. The L&B is much more than a visitor attraction, it's an educational charity with a living classroom promoting an understanding of the transport systems of the past and their affect on the rural community living on the remotest and wildest parts of Exmoor. Today it is owned by the Members of the L&BR Trust and run almost entirely by volunteers. Exmoor Zoo 01598 763352 - Enjoy a day out in the North-west of Exmoor at Exmoor zoo, one of the "west-country's hidden gems" on the edge of the National Park. Here you can experience a truly unique rural zoo set into a valley in North Devon. Discover rare and unusual animals seldom found in other zoos like binturong and tayra, along with favourites like meerkats and lemurs. The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway 01598 753486 - The multi-award winning and famous Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is the UK's only fully water powered railway and Silver winner of Devon's Large Attraction of the Year 2020. Built in 1888, it operates using only completely renewable and sustainable fresh river water and remains the world's highest and the steepest fully water powered railway in the world. The attraction holds the highest 'Gold' award for sustainable and ethical tourism, was voted by Which? as the UK's best Cliff Railway and has multiple accolades for heritage engineering. With 862ft of steep track and an elevation of 500ft the railway provides a memorable experience for all that visit it.
Watersmeet is the meeting place of the East Lyn river and Hoar Oak Water. Explore the rich woodlands of the Lyn Valley and stroll along the riverside at Lynmouth, Combe Park and Rockford. Its run by the National trust and has a great Tea Room. Woody Bay, on the rugged Exmoor Coast, certainly lives up to its name. The rocky cove is backed by steep, heavily wooded cliffs. The walk down to the beach is as much of a delight as the cove itself; the path zig-zags through the woods, passing some amusing signage on the way.
