South Molton -- Approximately 10 miles south. This attractive market town has several pubs, cafes, and restaurants, including the Stumbles Inn and various independent eateries around the pannier market square.

Barnstaple -- Approximately 15 miles northwest. A wide range of restaurants, pubs, and cafes, including both independent and chain options. Barnstaple's Butchers Row and pannier market are worth visiting for local produce and artisan food.

Explore the moorland -- Challacombe sits on the edge of some of the wildest and most open moorland on Exmoor. Step out of the village and you are immediately into a landscape of heather-covered hills, ancient trackways, and far-reaching views. This is superb walking country, with few fences and a real sense of space and solitude.

Chapman Barrows -- A striking group of Bronze Age round barrows on the open moor above Challacombe, approximately 1.5 miles from the village. These burial mounds date back over 3,000 years and sit on a high ridge with panoramic views in every direction. An atmospheric and historically significant site, easily reached on foot from the village.

Challacombe Roman Fort -- The remains of a Roman fortlet lie on the moorland near the village, one of only a handful of Roman military sites on Exmoor. Though little is visible above ground today, the site is of considerable archaeological interest and marks the line of a Roman road across the moor.

Red deer watching -- Exmoor is home to England's largest wild red deer herd, and the moorland around Challacombe is prime deer country. Dawn and dusk are the best times for sightings, particularly during the autumn rut when the stags can be heard roaring across the valleys.

Exmoor ponies -- Wild Exmoor ponies roam freely on the surrounding moors. These hardy native ponies have lived on Exmoor for thousands of years and are a much-loved feature of the landscape. The moorland above Challacombe is one of the best areas to spot them grazing.

Fishing -- Several streams and rivers near Challacombe offer fishing opportunities. The River Bray flows through the valley below the village, and the upper reaches of the River Barle are accessible from the eastern moor. Permits are available locally.

Arlington Court -- A National Trust Regency house and estate approximately 8 miles from Challacombe. The house contains a fascinating collection of model ships, shells, and pewter. The grounds include a Victorian garden, a lake, and a nationally important colony of lesser horseshoe bats. The estate's carriage museum houses over 50 horse-drawn vehicles.

Exmoor Zoo -- A small, friendly zoo approximately 6 miles from Challacombe, home to a variety of animals including Exmoor's own beast -- the Exmoor pony. The zoo specialises in smaller and lesser-known species, with keeper talks and feeding sessions throughout the day.

North Devon Coast -- The golden sand beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde, and Saunton Sands are approximately 30 minutes by car from Challacombe. Combe Martin, with its wildlife park and sheltered harbour, is even closer at approximately 10 miles.

Stargazing -- Exmoor was designated Europe's first International Dark Sky Reserve. Challacombe's remote location and high altitude make it one of the finest stargazing spots on the moor, with exceptionally low levels of light pollution.

Walks from the Doorstep

Chapman Barrows Circular -- A rewarding moderate walk from Challacombe climbing onto the open moor to visit the Bronze Age barrows on the ridge above the village. The route follows ancient trackways through heather and grass moorland, with magnificent views across Exmoor and towards the coast. Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours for the full circuit of around 4 miles.

Shoulsbarrow Common -- Walk south from Challacombe onto the open expanse of Shoulsbarrow Common, a wild stretch of heather moorland popular with Exmoor ponies and red deer. The walking is easy to moderate over open ground, with options to extend further onto the central moor. A wonderful area for a quiet moorland ramble.

River Bray Valley -- Follow the valley of the River Bray downstream from Challacombe through a peaceful landscape of meadows, woodland, and traditional Exmoor farmland. The path offers a gentler, sheltered alternative to the exposed moor, with good chances of seeing dippers, herons, and other riverside wildlife.

Chains Barrow and The Chains -- For experienced walkers, the remote high moor known as The Chains lies to the east of Challacombe. This is the wettest and wildest part of Exmoor, a vast expanse of blanket bog and rough grassland where the Rivers Exe, Barle, and West Lyn all have their sources. Navigation skills and proper equipment are essential as the terrain is boggy and exposed.

Two Moors Way -- This long-distance trail linking Exmoor to Dartmoor passes through the moorland near Challacombe. The northern sections offer superb high-level walking with views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

Heddon Valley -- A dramatic National Trust coastal valley approximately 8 miles from Challacombe. A popular walk descends through ancient oak woodland to the sea at Heddon's Mouth, where the river meets the coast in a spectacular rocky cove. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the circular walk from the Hunter's Inn.

Beaches

Combe Martin -- The nearest coastal village, approximately 10 miles from Challacombe. A sheltered bay with a small sandy beach at low tide, rock pools, and a dramatic coastline. The village also has the Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, cafes, and pubs.

Woolacombe -- One of the finest sandy beaches in England, approximately 30 minutes by car from Challacombe. A vast 3-mile stretch of golden sand backed by dunes, with excellent surfing conditions and lifeguard cover in summer. Regularly voted among the best beaches in the UK.

Croyde -- A popular surfing beach approximately 35 minutes from Challacombe, with a beautiful sandy bay surrounded by headlands. The village has a relaxed, lively atmosphere with surf shops, pubs, and cafes.

Saunton Sands -- A magnificent long sandy beach backed by the Braunton Burrows dune system, approximately 35 minutes from Challacombe. Excellent for families, walkers, and surfers alike.

Lee Bay -- A tiny, sheltered cove near Woolacombe, quieter than its neighbours and ideal for a peaceful day by the sea. Rock pools and a small sandy area at low tide.

Porlock Bay -- On the Exmoor coast approximately 15 miles east of Challacombe. A dramatic shingle bay backed by salt marshes, with views across to South Wales. Bossington Beach at the western end is a wild and atmospheric spot.
