The region
+ MoreExmoor is situated in South West Britain, specifically across West Somerset and North Devon. Often referred to as England's best kept secret, Exmoor is a wonderful holiday destination for anyone looking for a holiday in the great outdoors! There's so much to see and do, from sho...rt walks to long expeditions across the moors or horse riding, taking in a safari or sight-seeing at your own pace around the 'picture postcard' villages and hamlets. It is a place full of contrasts; dramatic coastlines of plunging cliffs, sheltered bays and historicports, wide open space and wilderness of the moors as well as the wooded valleys with quiet trails for you to enjoy. Exmoor is a holiday destination of unrivaled beauty and interest. Countisbury is an attractive rural parish in North Devon and within Exmoor National Park. The 'wilds' of the moorland literally tumble into the sea creating dramatic cliffs and a breathtaking coastline. Exmoor National Park is a popular holiday destination for walkers, cyclists and horse riders as well as those wishing to enjoy the many square miles of beautiful countryside and coastline and there a few better places to experience these activities than Countisbury. The picturesque villages of Lynton and Lynmouth are nearby, famous for the funicular cliff railway that runs between the two villages. Malmsmead and the 'Doone Valley' is also nearby, made famous by the novel called 'Lorna Doone' by R.D. Blackmore. The capital of North Devon is Barnstaple and provides an extensive range of facilities including the famous Victorian pannier market and Butchers Row.
The Rising Sun on the quay in Lynmouth has a good restaurant specialising in seafood. The Blue Ball Inn, 2 miles west of Yenworthy on the A39 at Countisbury, is a dog-friendly pub with indoor and outdoor eating. The food here is good quality pub food, generous portions and good value. There are lots of spectacular walking paths nearby. Similar is the Stag Hunters Inn by the East Lyn river in Brendon.
The two villages of Lynmouth and Lynton are approx 5 miles from Yenworthy. Lynmouth is the harbour village sitting on the coast and Lynton sits 600 feet above on top of the hill. The two villages are linked by the famous funicular cliff railway which is well worth a ride (there is also a road and a footpath joining the two!) They are attractive villages with a good range of pubs, restaurants, cafes, tea shops and art/craft shops, plus tennis courts, a putting green and bowling green. There is a village cinema in Lynton with a varied program, check details at: www.lyntoncinema.co.uk. The village of Porlock is approx 7 miles east of Yenworthy and has three pubs, two grocery shops, a traditional local butcher, Post Office, chemist, cash machine, petrol station, hardware shop, visitor centre and a range of independent restaurants, shops and tea rooms. Minehead is approximately 14 miles away. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations, most major high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops throughout the town. Lynton & Lynmouth Tourist Information Centre and Porlock Visitor Centre are both a wealth of information. Lynton Tourist Information is in the Town Hall on Lee Road - the main street through Lynton towards Valley of the Rocks. Porlock Visitor Centre is housed along with the village library in the old school at the junction of the road to Porlock Weir off the A39.
Exmoor is a walkers paradise, and the location of Yenworthy Mill really lends itself to being a fabulous base for your walking holiday. There are numerous walks from the door, including the South West Coast Path, down to the coastline and up onto the moors - you will be spoilt for choice! There is more information inside the cottage with suggested walks. Glenthorne Beach, which is on the farm, is good for walking to and walking along but is stony and not suitable for swimming. A little further afield is Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde and Saunton Sands, they are huge, white, sandy beaches which face the Atlantic. These beaches are excellent for swimming, surfing, windsurfing and bodyboarding. The closest is at Woolacombe, about a 45 minutes drive away and so it is probably best as a day trip. Woolacombe can get busy in high season but there are very big car parks and the beach is so big that you can always find a space if you walk along a bit. There are also beaches in Minehead and Dunster. These are lovely beaches but are somewhat shallow for swimming and when the tide is out, the shore seems miles away! The beach at Lynmouth is stony. Lynmouth does, however, have a charming English seaside, ice cream, fish and chips feel to it. Porlock beach is a dog-friendly 4 mile stretch of pebbly beach, comprised of a shingle ridge of considerable archaeological and geographical significance. There is marshland behind the beach which is home to numerous birds. It is possible to swim at Porlock Weir at high tide.
