The region
+ MoreDunster is brimming with history and has been well-preserved as a Medieval village, the High Street is iconic with the Dunster Castle (National Trust) sitting proudly at one end, and the Yarn Market at the other. There's also the Tithe Barn to explore, the Dovecote, Butter Cross ...and the 15th century church. Dunster is also a bustling village with several restaurants, pubs and tea rooms, plus a varied range of independent shops and galleries. Many of the shops in Dunster are open during traditional hours of 9 am to 5 pm, although hours are often extended during the summer season. Conversely, some shops may also reduce their opening days and/or hours out-of-season. Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 1.5 miles from Dunster. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrison's are both situated on the outskirts of the town and have long opening hours), most major high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops throughout the town.
There are several good places to eat in Dunster including: Reeves Restaurant on the High Street in Dunster The Stags Head Inn, West Street, Dunster Luttrell Arms Hotel, High Street, Dunster Cobblestones, High Street (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) The above are all within easy walking distance from the cottage.
Exmoor is a great place to visit, whether you're looking for sedate days looking around shops and galleries, or wanting to take day-long expeditions across the moors and through woodlands. You can take a days outing to the lovely village of Porlock and Porlock Weir. Also a drive to Lynmouth (with lovely scenery on the way) is recommended. There you can take a trip on the cliff railway and visit the Lynmouth flood Museum. A trip on the West Somerset Steam Railway (a heritage railway with old steam engines) is also very interesting. The railway station in Minehead is on Warren Road. If you enjoy a game of golf you will find a stunning 18-hole course at the Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club. Visitors are also welcome at the Minehead Bridge Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Further information, telephone numbers and ideas of things to do are included in the welcome brochure in the cottage.
In the vicinity of the cottage there are several pleasant walks from easy to challenging and offering wonderful views, for example, Galleys Hill, Conygar Tower, Dunster Beach. It is also very pleasant to walk around Dunster Castle's lovely park and also visit the medieval watermill.
