The region
+ MoreBossington Green Cottage sits in Porlock Vale, one of Exmoor’s most picturesque spots, on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Bossington, known for its chocolate-box thatched cottages and tranquil lanes, and large shingle beach. The hamlet of Allerford - famous for its 15th-centur...y packhorse bridge - is just up the lane. And Porlock, a mile away, offers pubs, cafés, and shops, while Minehead, ten minutes by car, provides larger stores and amenities. From the cottage, there are wonderful walks in every direction; wander to Bossington Beach and continue along the coast to Porlock Weir, maybe try some Polrock Bay Oysters while you are there? Or explore Selworthy and venture up through the ancient woods to Selworthy Beacon, or on the other side of the vale from Horner up to Dunkery Beacon, for sweeping views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.
Places to eat – The Porlock Weir Hotel is the owners' favourite place to go locally. The restaurant offers good food in a semi-formal setting, or they have a terrace serving pizza and other bits and bobs which is more causal and has the most incredible views over the harbour. Also in Porlock Weir, Porlock Bay Oysters serve amazing oysters and other seafood in their ‘Oyster shack’. There are 3 pubs in Porlock itself, The Royal Oak offers nice food in a cosy setting, The Castle is a great place to have a drink and has a pool table and lots of friendly locals, and The Top Ship is a good ‘allrounder’ pub with plenty of space and a nice beer garden with a children’s play area.
Bossington Beach is about 10 minutes on foot from the property, and from here you can walk along to Porlock and Porlock Weir, or up to Hurlestone Point and up, up, up to Selworthy Beacon if you're up for a challenge! Lots of wonderful walks in this area, direct from the door.
