The cottage is situated beside a quiet country lane with views across to the fields opposite. There are two private gardens for the guests' sole use, one is directly opposite the cottage and is accessed via a footbridge, the garden is enclosed and picnic benches are provided. The second 'secret' garden is a short distance along the lane (approx 25 metres from the front door) and has access to the river which children and dogs love cooling off in the summer months. Again, seating is provided in this garden also. From the cottage you can walk to Snowdrop Valley, a "carpet of snowdrops" which bloom in February/March each year. From here, head up onto the moors and Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor, on a clear day you can look across the Bristol Channel to Wales, up the coast towards North Somerset, and in the other direction you can see right down into Dartmoor - stunning 360 degree views of Exmoor!

The region
+ MoreTimberscombe is a small yet charming village, approx 1.5 miles away, which has a pub (serving food and is dog-friendly), church and post office. Dunster (3 miles further on) is a beautiful medieval village, boasting its own Castle, Yarn Market, Tithe Barn and a range of other hi...storical buildings that we are well worth exploring. Exmoor's scenery can be quite varied and is certainly breathtaking, from open expanses of moorland, to quiet wooded valleys, family-friendly beaches to secluded bays, trickling streams and fast flowing rivers, a majestic coastline with the highest sea cliffs in the country, plus an abundance of wildlife including herds of wild red deer and Exmoor ponies and some 600 miles of way-marked walks.
The village pub in Timberscombe is The Lion Inn, it's dog and family friendly and serves good pub food. The village pub in Wheddon Cross is The Rest & Be Thankful Inn, again it's dog and family friendly and serves pub food plus a lovely carvery on certain days of the week. If you're willing to drive further afield there is greats selection of pubs and restaurants in neighbouring villages and towns. Our recommendations can be found in the Guest Welcome pack located in each cottage.
There's a myriad of things to do on Exmoor; there's railways, zoos, golf, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, walking and riding, all easily accessible from the cottage. Exploring on horse back is probably one of the best ways to see and hear Exmoor at its best. Being that much closer to nature you are more likely to see red deer, Exmoor ponies, birds and butterflies living on the moor. If horse riding isn't your scene, there are local Land Rover Safaris from Porlock and Exford most days. The guide knows all the best places to show you Exmoor at its best. Fishing is also a great pastime on Exmoor. We have fishing in the local rivers and streams, fishing at nearby Wimbleball Lake and being so close to the coast, sea fishing trips are also very popular. Don't forget you need a fishing permit! West Somerset and Devon has some excellent golf courses right beside the sea. Minehead and Saunton Sands are probably the most well known locally. If you are looking for night-time activities, there is a wide assortment of restaurants, pubs and bars spread throughout Exmoor’s villages and in Minehead. Also as a designated Dark Skies Reserve, Exmoor by night will unveil a spectacular sea of stars.
From the cottage you can walk to Snowdrop Valley and then up onto the moors and to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. On a clear day, from here you can look across the Bristol Channel to Wales, up the coastline towards North Somerset, and in the other direction you can see right down into Dartmoor. Hopefully you will see some Exmoor red deer on your walk too. From Dunkery you can complete a circular walk eventually taking you back down the hill to the Travellers Rest. Further information about suggested walks and footpaths is provided in the cottage. We are lucky to be not too far from the wonderful sandy surfing beaches of North Devon, allow an hour to drive for a beach day out. Woolacombe is a firm family favourite with its golden sand and dunes; it is a clean and safe beach with great surfing waves. Croyde and Putsborough are also favourite beaches with local families; again lovely sandy beaches, surfing and sailing. Plus Croyde has rock pools which are popular with younger children. Saunton Sands has 3 miles of sandy beach and dunes - again with excellent surfing and is ideal for all water sports.
