The Red Barn -- A popular restaurant and bar with a relaxed atmosphere, serving locally sourced produce including steaks, seafood, and burgers. The menu changes seasonally and there is a good selection of local ales and cocktails. Open for lunch and dinner. Booking recommended in summer.

Rockpool -- A seafood restaurant overlooking Woolacombe beach, specialising in fresh fish and shellfish. The terrace has wonderful views across the bay. A great spot for a special meal.

Captain's Table -- A family-friendly pub in the heart of Woolacombe serving hearty meals, Sunday roasts, and a good range of ales. Popular with both visitors and locals.

The Beach Comber -- A relaxed cafe and bar right on the esplanade, ideal for a morning coffee, a lunchtime sandwich, or an afternoon drink overlooking the beach.

In Mortehoe (1 mile)

The Chichester Arms -- A traditional village pub dating back centuries, serving well-kept ales and a menu of pub classics alongside daily specials featuring local ingredients. The beer garden has views towards Morte Point.

Smugglers Rest -- A welcoming pub and restaurant in Mortehoe village with a varied menu and a cosy atmosphere. Good for families.

Broomhill Estate -- An art hotel and restaurant set in sculpture gardens near Muddiford, approximately 8 miles from Woolacombe. The restaurant serves creative modern British food using local produce, surrounded by an outstanding collection of contemporary sculpture.

The Quay, Ilfracombe -- Situated on the harbour front in Ilfracombe, approximately 6 miles away. A well-regarded restaurant serving fresh seafood and modern British cuisine with views across the harbour. Booking recommended.

Woolacombe Beach -- Three miles of golden sand, perfect for surfing, bodyboarding, swimming, sandcastle building, and kite flying. The beach faces west into the Atlantic and picks up consistent swell, making it one of the best surf beaches in England. Several surf schools offer lessons for all ages and abilities. At low tide, rock pools at the northern and southern ends of the beach reveal crabs, anemones, and small fish.

Barricane Beach -- A small, sheltered cove tucked between Woolacombe and Mortehoe, reached by a short walk from the village. Barricane is famous for its tropical shells, washed across the Atlantic from the Caribbean by the Gulf Stream. At low tide, the rock pools are excellent for exploring.

Morte Point -- A dramatic, jagged headland at the northern end of Woolacombe Bay. The circular walk from Mortehoe around the point is approximately 3 miles and offers spectacular views along the coast. Grey seals are regularly spotted in the waters below, and the wildflowers in spring and summer are outstanding.

Baggy Point -- A National Trust headland at the southern end of Woolacombe Bay, near Croyde. The coastal walk around Baggy Point is one of the finest short walks in North Devon, with dramatic cliffs, seabird colonies, and views stretching to Lundy Island on a clear day.

Surf lessons -- Woolacombe has several well-established surf schools offering lessons for complete beginners through to improvers. Equipment hire -- wetsuits, surfboards, and bodyboards -- is available from shops on the esplanade and in the village.

Tunnels Beaches, Ilfracombe -- A unique attraction approximately 6 miles from Woolacombe. Hand-carved tunnels through the cliff lead to a sheltered Victorian tidal bathing pool, a natural rock pool beach, and a dramatic stretch of coastline. Open seasonally.

Watermouth Castle -- A family attraction approximately 6 miles from Woolacombe, set in a Victorian castle above a beautiful cove. Watermouth has indoor and outdoor attractions including mechanical music displays, a dungeon labyrinth, water gardens, and adventure play areas.

Lundy Island -- A remarkable island in the Bristol Channel, reached by boat from Ilfracombe harbour (approximately 2 hours). Lundy is home to puffins, grey seals, sika deer, and rare wildlife. Day trips run from spring to autumn aboard the MS Oldenburg. Booking essential.

Exmoor National Park -- The high moorland, wooded valleys, and dramatic coastal cliffs of Exmoor are within a 30-minute drive. Highlights include Dunkery Beacon (the highest point), the Valley of Rocks near Lynmouth, Tarr Steps ancient clapper bridge, and wild red deer and Exmoor ponies roaming freely on the moor.

Walks

South West Coast Path -- England's longest National Trail runs right through Woolacombe. You can join the path from the village and walk in either direction along some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the country. The full trail stretches 630 miles from Minehead to Poole, but even a short section from Woolacombe is rewarding.

Woolacombe to Morte Point Circular -- A superb 3-mile walk from Woolacombe through Mortehoe village and out around the jagged headland of Morte Point. The path follows the coast past dramatic rocky outcrops where grey seals bask in the waters below. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours. Graded easy to moderate.

Woolacombe to Croyde via Baggy Point -- A magnificent 6-mile coastal walk heading south from Woolacombe along the cliffs, around the National Trust headland of Baggy Point, and down into Croyde village. Dramatic cliff scenery, seabird colonies, and far-reaching views throughout. Allow around 3 to 4 hours one way.

Mortehoe Village Walk -- A gentle 1-mile stroll from Woolacombe up to the charming village of Mortehoe, with its medieval church and heritage centre. From Mortehoe, you can continue to Morte Point or loop back via the lane.

Beaches

Woolacombe Beach -- The main beach, stretching 3 miles from Morte Point to Putsborough. Golden sand, excellent surf, and lifeguard patrols throughout the summer season. Dogs are welcome on sections of the beach year-round (restrictions apply in summer on the main lifeguarded area).

Barricane Beach -- A small, sheltered cove just north of Woolacombe, reached by a short walk along the coast path. Famous for its Caribbean shells and excellent rock pooling. A lovely alternative to the main beach when you want a quieter spot.

Putsborough Beach -- The southern end of Woolacombe Bay, backed by dunes and the National Trust land of Baggy Point. Putsborough has a more secluded feel than the main beach and is popular with surfers and families. There is a cafe and beach shop at the car park.

Croyde Beach -- Approximately 3 miles south, Croyde is a compact sandy beach famous for its powerful surf. Surrounded by thatched cottages and rolling dunes, it has a charming village atmosphere. Rock pools at the northern end are excellent.

Saunton Sands -- Approximately 5 miles south, Saunton is a vast 3-mile stretch of golden sand backed by the Braunton Burrows dune system -- a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The beach is quieter than Woolacombe and ideal for long walks, kite surfing, and open-water swimming.
